<span style="color: #999999; font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">I find Ryan McGinley inspirational and I like the atmosphere of his photographs, the way he captures the light. My project began by capturing light so I think it would be really good for me to try and incorporate this style into my photographs and zine.</span></div>

I do want to add text but keep it minimal. I took my photos before doing my research which in he insight was a bad idea.</span></div>

<span style="color: #999999; font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">This week i have been thinking more about collections. I definitely want a collection that can be for screen printing with a limited colour palette as its a good skill to have and could increase my chances of getting a job in the future. Below are some initial ideas for that collection.</span><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-UFR0R55d9BtT9UzPskHwn0d2eP0bLQRwieF3miQY8b5bci5ABeSGxGUG6hjRk6fbYcc3ZL74Vv7E0PCjq-3Z9Tc44dBAb3Cq1nOgzoZldwsCrEGW3pT8D3uscPdGKjQQHn4w43CNMkw/s1600/blog1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="128" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-UFR0R55d9BtT9UzPskHwn0d2eP0bLQRwieF3miQY8b5bci5ABeSGxGUG6hjRk6fbYcc3ZL74Vv7E0PCjq-3Z9Tc44dBAb3Cq1nOgzoZldwsCrEGW3pT8D3uscPdGKjQQHn4w43CNMkw/s640/blog1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #999999; font-family: 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;">Another collection I am interested in doing is layer and lines. I like the look of the broken up prints and plan to break them up further with the use of panelling.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1kL3MBI6ohrko5QA5zKMRnsxqMna_-rVoSrmM_DmvDdCTQGtWQBPfhnIY7N6zw51iYTyx4H5vxogRw5nBT4nVzvTzDptnVEZPgpjemVxvpLCnmEPiFCFEWr9x2G7r0KtX2uw_eSqV3BM/s1600/blog2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="128" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1kL3MBI6ohrko5QA5zKMRnsxqMna_-rVoSrmM_DmvDdCTQGtWQBPfhnIY7N6zw51iYTyx4H5vxogRw5nBT4nVzvTzDptnVEZPgpjemVxvpLCnmEPiFCFEWr9x2G7r0KtX2uw_eSqV3BM/s640/blog2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #999999; font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">The collection below is some photography with drawings and painting. I really like the mood of the collection. <span style="color: #999999; font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">This week I have mainly been concentrating on my extended essay as I prefer to do things in blocks as opposed to re-visiting something once a week. After a talk with my tutor we decided that it was best that I leave the boutique for unit X but continue to create relevant samples in this project as you can see below. This meant my live project would have to change. I am doing a placement in a school but would also like to gain experience in industry as I feel this will increase my chances of getting a job. I've applied for an internship at Jane Carr which I feel would be really beneficial as its accessories and this is what I want to go into.</span></div>

<span style="color: #999999; font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">This week I have been researching into starting up an asos boutique as my live project. I will not be able to apply for the boutique until all the products are ready to be photographed for sale. This includes having final prints.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #999999; font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">I plan to sell clutch bags, digitally printed scarves, canvas bags and head scarves. I have experience in making scarves from second year.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #999999; font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">I have began to research into clutch bags as this is unknown territory for me. These straps are coming onto the catwalks for autumn/winter 2014/2015 as seen by Jil Sander and Gabriele Colansela. and they are something that I would like to incorporate into my design if possible.</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #999999; font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">Transparent clothing and accessories are in all year for 2014 so this is something that I am interested in looking into. Burberry, Phillip Lim, Lacoste and Dries Van Noten have all got them in their 2014 collections. I could possibly make transparent clutches.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">This week was all about creating new drawings and prints, putting them together to see what went together. I have never done this before and I have found it extremely useful. In future I will print off all my photographs and prints and continue to do this to gain inspiration and ideas for prints.</span></div>

<h2>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #999999; font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace; font-size: small; font-weight: normal;">I first concentrated on gathering colourful photographs and making them look more man made with filters. Some of these photos I think will stand strong as prints on their own.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEieqLH2rWh3FjVJwc3OwAFo0CXbFypauJOQGJp0DQwRTseGuf4qdrZ9ulpUGdyviaHSvnCOHRJvQ3TC6myTWSjDNmihkwCGCYkqkWbUhgt9kb0B2YxARlwjyvFVoM-PEJcSQmbCtnAvewM/s1600/Untitled-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="160" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEieqLH2rWh3FjVJwc3OwAFo0CXbFypauJOQGJp0DQwRTseGuf4qdrZ9ulpUGdyviaHSvnCOHRJvQ3TC6myTWSjDNmihkwCGCYkqkWbUhgt9kb0B2YxARlwjyvFVoM-PEJcSQmbCtnAvewM/s640/Untitled-1.jpg" width="640" /></a><span style="color: #999999; font-family: 'Courier New', Courier, monospace; font-size: small; font-weight: normal;"></span></div>
</div>
<span style="font-weight: normal;"><span style="color: #999999; font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace; font-size: small;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
I then wanted to capture the complete opposite of pretty flowers so I went to an old train grave yard. It was perfect.<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
While I was experimenting on photoshop as a complete mistake I came across this layer effect where one image starts and the other begins but I really like it and its really relevant as I am also interested in creating layers with materials in my final pieces.</div>

<span style="letter-spacing: 0px;"><span style="color: #999999; font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">This week I dedicated my time to creating more drawings and paintings and collecting more photographs. I tried to stay away from mark making as in the past I have only done this and really struggled for imagery so I concentrated on drawing and painting whole objects. It was hard to get into at first as I feel this is a weakness of mine, however, as the week went on it became much easier and quicker. Below are just a couple of things I have created this week</span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj64Pjy4U4ruLDWEItoqlxOSprje6uElegSfIzlMqSeW09KxT-lNV-fNMDv2pTc_MMoCnXePnP0xHwfqJ3qewK4G2nSZqwrCRiZPydABMxRd-SbNu_GXUGg0xEoRR2pSPQZbVDh36g-Hq8/s1600/IMG_0343.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="color: #999999; font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;"><img border="0" height="269" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj64Pjy4U4ruLDWEItoqlxOSprje6uElegSfIzlMqSeW09KxT-lNV-fNMDv2pTc_MMoCnXePnP0xHwfqJ3qewK4G2nSZqwrCRiZPydABMxRd-SbNu_GXUGg0xEoRR2pSPQZbVDh36g-Hq8/s320/IMG_0343.JPG" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxzNeStFiJtPMTGjYN8wUU7WF8RXFJD8tjv9IsDNedM0CEyBNXnlc50XgngcXutM_CvXwsC_KZ4au6gRmp8vQhJXpEk4SxK7mYoMvCUyDzG0IELfJUngOHnCV0jn_3fJE2aAXLV722tNk/s1600/IMG_0382.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="color: #999999; font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;"><img border="0" height="259" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxzNeStFiJtPMTGjYN8wUU7WF8RXFJD8tjv9IsDNedM0CEyBNXnlc50XgngcXutM_CvXwsC_KZ4au6gRmp8vQhJXpEk4SxK7mYoMvCUyDzG0IELfJUngOHnCV0jn_3fJE2aAXLV722tNk/s320/IMG_0382.JPG" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 11px; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #999999; font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0px;">This week has been really </span>beneficial<span style="letter-spacing: 0px;"> and given me time to think in depth about my project and the things I would like to explore within it. When I look back at my drawings I am drawn to natural things so next week I plan to visit a forest and get photos of fungi and a scrapyard as I think I will be able to get photographs of </span>machinery<span style="letter-spacing: 0px;"> and decaying meta textures etc. From these photographs I will be able to do some mark making and this is something I really enjoy. I also plan to capture traffic at night as I am still really interested in movement of light.</span></span></div>

<span style="color: #999999; font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">I am happy with the ideas I have so far however in he insight I started creating prints too soon. I do not have enough, photographs, drawings, paintings, research or ideas. To combat this I will spend the next 2 weeks soley taking photos and drawing from them. I will develop the prints I have created at a later date.</span></div>

<div>
<span style="color: #45818e; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: xx-small; letter-spacing: 0px;">During Unit X I have learnt many things about myself and the way in which I work. I can identify how to improve my work; I can take advice for improvement and always respond positively; I am developing my knowledge and the application of that knowledge to present my work to suit a particular clients’ need; and I am learning to analyse, and evaluate my work.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #45818e; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: xx-small; letter-spacing: 0.0px;">At the beginning of this project I was torn between whether I wanted to design prints for interiors or fashion. Nonetheless, I chose the Dianne Harrison brief as the titles within it sounded the most interesting and inspiring. </span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #45818e; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: xx-small; letter-spacing: 0.0px;">Working from a live brief was something new for me; this meant that although it was a project I was being assessed as part of my University Degree course, it ultimately had to meet the needs of an outside client. How exciting; I would be able to see if my textile designs were innovative and unique enough to meet the very competitive design industries’ high standards. </span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #45818e; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: xx-small; letter-spacing: 0.0px;">Initially, I was unsure of what the client, Dianne Harrison wanted. I normally work from photographs that I have set up, taken myself and then layered with a few hand drawn images in Photoshop. I had chosen the ‘Exploration’ section of the brief and after some research decided to make it more concise and just concentrate on ‘The Exploration of the Sea’. My first thought was to visit some aquariums to get primary images; although the subsequent photographs are not visible in my end result the visits motivated me further. </span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #45818e; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: xx-small; letter-spacing: 0.0px;">The trip to the Dianne Harrison Studio was a real learning curve for me; it changed everything. After seeing their work, I realised that all their designs are hand drawn, without any sign of digital imagery. This meant I had to re-think my normal thought process and plan of action to meet the client’s needs and requirements. - I began gathering more visual research to draw and paint from. Later, when the male Designer from Dianne Harrison Studio visited my university, he suggested I try more transparent media like tracing paper. I took his advice and after experimentation on: tracing paper, paper and acetate I finally came across clear film – it is really thin acetate on a roll. I knew immediately that this gave the ‘sea effect’ I was looking for; I loved the way the ink dried in such a fluid way. I began building a collection of ink paintings on clear film to scan and use digitally. I was pleased as I had succeeded in coming up with a new idea to get the effect I wanted and had linked together what I had learnt from the whole ‘Dianne Harrison experience’ with my independent experimentation. I had learnt new processes and had to try different ways of working, but had taken the professional advice and seen it through to completion. I adapted my experimentation accordingly to reach a successful outcome.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #45818e; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: xx-small; letter-spacing: 0.0px;">At present, all my designs are for bedding. Despite drawing my inspiration from ‘The Exploration of the Sea’, the Dianne Harrison review only confirmed what I was already beginning to realise that bedding with inhabitants from the sea would not appeal to the market. The man from Dianne Harrison could not understand why I was painting jellyfish and underwater creatures for bedding because it would not sell. I knew then that I had to try and just take the massive range of colours, textures and patterns forward.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #45818e; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: xx-small; letter-spacing: 0.0px;">In this project, I have learnt there are many benefits to creating prints for interiors; high selling prices amongst them, as opposed to prints for fashion which sell for far less. Despite this, I think I enjoy designing prints for fashion more; I find it less constraining and more versatile. Interiors on the other hand, often involve repeat pattern and although this gives me a sense of achievement as they are a good deal more technically challenging to produce than a one-off fashion print, I do not feel as inspired by them; nor do I feel as proud of the end result.</span><br />
<span style="color: #45818e; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: xx-small; letter-spacing: 0.0px;">Unit X is all about interdisciplinary collaboration. I enjoyed working as a group in the first section of the project but I was disappointed there wasn't another opportunity to work as a group. Sometime in the near future I would like to create group work to give me more of a sense of what its like to work in a design team.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #45818e; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: xx-small; letter-spacing: 0.0px;">Generally, my time management was quite good throughout this project, I never leave things until the last minute; however I am a slow starter and work better under pressure. I do not give up easily and will always persevere with a challenge in my designs, even when the going is slow and tough. If I think it will work, I will persevere until I can get it as good as the time allows. </span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #45818e; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: xx-small; letter-spacing: 0.0px;">I think my contextual research could have been stronger, I should have more extensively researched bedding; I could have looked at Marks and Spencers, Sandersons, Dot Mason etc. I could of also done more artist research and this may have influenced my end results. Overall, I am happy with the majority of my designs. If I had more time, I would resolve a few of my designs. When I printed my designs off to scale a couple of them were pixelated and had too much white space, but it was too late to rectify at this late stage. Although I was not happy with a couple of the to scale prints, I was happy with them in their visualisation, so they would probably work well when printed on fabric. </span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #45818e; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: xx-small; letter-spacing: 0.0px;">If I were to start again, I would ensure that I am sticking to the design standards of printing (for example 200cm x 200cm for bedding); I would also make sure my repeats were 8x8 or a multiple of that, to stop myself from having to edit or re-produce designs in the late stages of the project.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #45818e; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: xx-small; letter-spacing: 0.0px;">I have really enjoyed being a part of this project, the experiences and knowledge I have gained are invaluable; I am excited at the thought of receiving feedback from Dianne Harrison to see what they think of my designs. Whatever, the feedback I shall take any form of constructive criticism on board as it will maximise my potential in the design industry. This experience has given me a real insight in to how a real successful design company works.</span></div>
<span style="color: #45818e; font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: xx-small; letter-spacing: 0px;">Below are my flat visualisations which show both the full print and to give a sense of the scale of the print.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: xx-small;">I always like to print my designs onto fabric to test the colour and to see which designs I should take forward. </span><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif; font-size: xx-small;">Below are some photographs of the tester prints. I found doing this really useful as I have now made any colour changes to the designs that I need to. Some of the designs when printed onto the fabric became washed out, so I made the colours more intense on Photoshop to prevent this from happening again. I am mostly pleased with the way they turned out however, I think the top and middle prints on the right are too busy for the collection. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif; font-size: xx-small;">Once I had decided which prints I wanted to take forward I began working on my displacements. When I printed the fabric samples I had not considered scale and putting my designs onto a bed will help me visualise what scale is best for each design. Below are two displacements showing the scale I opted for with those specific prints. The top one is smaller scale and the two underneath are a larger scale scale. I am really glad I did these displacements as they made my decision on scale easier. They would also help potential buyers in the design world visualise what my prints would look like.</span><br />

<span style="letter-spacing: 0px;"><span style="color: #45818e;"> I have started creating designs in Photoshop. I have completed layering my drawings and paintings into repeat. Out of these first 4 designs, I think only the top left one captures the look I am going for, however I still need to make it look more professional. In the top left and bottom right designs, I have used random shapes to layer over the designs. I created these shapes by tracing random parts of some of my visual research and piecing them together to create interesting shapes. I really liked this idea; think it adds something to the design; and believe it will be a key factor to all my other designs. I like the top right design, but feel it is slightly too blue for my colour scheme. This would be an ideal opportunity to experiment with creating multiple colour variations to make it less blue; add variety and greater choice for the target market.</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #45818e; letter-spacing: 0.0px;"> The bottom two designs do not quite work. So, I plan to develop the top left design to make it more professional and experiment with colour changes to the top right. Hopefully, I will keep adding to and making changes to the top two until I create a design with the ‘wow’ factor or, go back to the drawing board. </span><br />

<span style="color: #45818e;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">I came across </span><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">Maciej Hajnrich, a freelance Polish Graphic Designer. He created the cover design for Photoshop I have looked into some of his work and although it is unlike my work it is technically really inspiring and influential.</span></span><br />

<span style="color: #45818e; letter-spacing: 0.0px;">The visit to Dianne Harrison Studio was educational and inspiring. It made me reflect on and re-think my whole practice. Normally, I work predominantly with primary digital photographs and layer them with my drawings. However, it became apparent that this is not what Dianne Harrison was looking for. It seems all of their designs are firstly, painted or hand drawn. So with this new – found knowledge I began to create additional drawings and paintings. I also thought that now would be a good idea to research into the market of interior bedding as this is what my designs are intended for so I looked at some similar designers. Although most of my designs are aimed at bedding I will most likely add them to other parts of interior design, for example: cushions, lampshades, boarders for walls, curtains and maybe even chiffon type blinds. I will decide this when I come to put my designs 'in the situation'.</span></div>

<span style="color: #45818e;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><br /></span>
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">I realised too, that the photographs I had taken at the aquarium were not enough, so I collected some more secondary images so that I would have a wealth of resources at my disposal. I began to work on acetate because I liked the effect it gave. When the male Designer from Dianne Harrison Studio visited, he suggested I try more transparent media like tracing paper. As I had already experimented with acetate I tried tracing paper and then clear film and immediately I loved the effect it gave, the inks dried on it in a really interesting and quite fluid way. Below there are just a small selection of some of ink paintings. </span></span></div>

<span style="color: #45818e; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS'; font-size: 10px; letter-spacing: 0px;">Regrettably I did not take any photographs when I was snorkeling in Egypt, so I had to resort to visiting a couple of local aquariums to shoot some primary images of fish. Below, there is just a small selection of the photographs I took. I particularly like the effect of movement that can be seen in Photographs 2 and 3. </span><br />
<div style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS'; font-size: 10px;">
<span style="color: #45818e; letter-spacing: 0.0px;">The lion fish in Photograph 4 is a venomous marine fish which has eye-catching warning colours of reddish-brown, white, cream, mauve and purple. It has impressive pectoral and tail fins, and a venomous spiky fin. It is characterised by its’ reddish-brown and white Zebra stripes. I have noticed these vertical Zebra stripes alternate from wide to thin. The lion fish’s colours, textures and patterns have so much potential for an aspiring Graphic/Fabric/Fashion Designer. I am also drawn to the membranes of all the fins which are mauve with purple spots; the tail is my favourite as it is so delicate. I also like the gradient of pattern created by the Zebra stripes on its’ flank. However, after completing some detailed drawings from these photographs, some of which can be seen below, I began to lose motivation and inspiration.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS'; font-size: 10px;">
<span style="color: #45818e;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0px;"> So I went back to basics...I started looking for images in books and on the internet and this is when I became interested in jellyfish. I found swimming images that Marine Biologist </span><span style="letter-spacing: 0px;">Alexander Semenov</span><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue'; font-size: 11px; letter-spacing: 0px;"> </span><span style="letter-spacing: 0px;">had shot. I love the gelatinous umbrella – shaped bell and the fantastic trailing tentacles. I noticed, that as in Photograph 9 some jellies are clear and look like a plastic bag in the sea, whereas all the other Photographs below have vibrant colours such as: yellow, green, orange, red, pink, blue and purple and they are often luminescent. The neon - type colours are exactly what I wanted and I have the added bonus of the way movement is captured by the jellies long trailing tentacles. Although these sea colours excite me I think I want my colour palette to be unpredictable and unexpected. I want to make it pinks, purples and blues, taken from the jellyfish but when in a design its not obviously a sea themed duvet.</span></span></div>

<span style="color: #45818e; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS'; font-size: 9px; letter-spacing: 0px;">Unit X is all about collaborating with fellow students to create new and exciting work. I chose the Dianne Harrison interiors brief as I knew it would give me a chance to work as both part of a design team and individually.I also chose this brief to also help me decide if its interiors or fashion I want to design for.</span><br />
<div style="color: #272727; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS'; font-size: 10px;">
<span style="color: #45818e; letter-spacing: 0.0px;">My group was set the Exploration title to research. On the first day we sat together, shared our ideas for topic and created a mind map of which I made a later digital version which can be seen below. I found working with interdisciplinary students really helpful, they have a different outlook and different ideas for the brief. After our first meeting, we decided to go and research into all the elements of the category and then meet in two days’ time with our research findings. At which point with more knowledge about the topic, we could discuss and apply what we had learnt; and then divide the task up into manageable sections. </span></div>
<div style="color: #272727; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS'; font-size: 10px;">
<span style="color: #45818e; letter-spacing: 0.0px;">I found the ‘Discovery’ section really interesting and this is something I want to take forward. In particular, I would like to research into sea discovery: coral reefs, marine plants, marine invertebrates, marine fish and reptiles. When I was in Egypt last summer they had fantastic coral reefs there. The environment provides a kaleidoscope of vibrant colours and always fascinates me. I have never had the nerve to go deep sea diving to the alien world of the deep ocean floor, but there are many breath taking secondary photographs of wonderful sea life such as: sharks, whales, octopus, jelly fish and giant shell fish.</span></div>
<div style="color: #272727; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS'; font-size: 10px;">
<span style="color: #45818e; letter-spacing: 0.0px;"> For my individual research I created the following boards. ‘Adventure’ brought up some good imagery, but although there was plenty of imagery it did not inspire me because the examples I found were not interesting or diverse enough. For ‘Travel’ I researched stamps and maps because modes of transport do not interest me as a Designer. Stamps research was inspiring; I had never realised that stamp design was an occupation for a Graphic Designer. I discovered that the graphic element of a stamp has four categories. It was the picture element that motivated me as this is the biggest selection of stamp design today. Stamp pictures range from plants, animals, transport, landscapes to pieces of original art work. I really liked this idea so I may bring this into my project along with what I had discovered about old passports and maps; they have some nice qualities too. </span></div>
<div style="color: #272727; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS'; font-size: 10px;">
<span style="color: #45818e; letter-spacing: 0.0px;"> ‘Media’ was the board the group as a whole struggled with most. I ended up putting it together for the final presentation. We looked into how the ‘Media’ can effect where you choose to travel, for example you would not travel to Iraq or Syria because of what is happening there in the news and it is being broadcast world-wide. Most tourists would give such places a very wide berth. ‘Media’ is interesting, but it would be very difficult to collect primary sources for this.</span></div>
<div style="color: #272727; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS'; font-size: 10px;">
<span style="color: #45818e; letter-spacing: 0.0px;"> As a group I think we worked well together; we jelled as a team and everyone got involved; we communicated effectively and shared ideas; we got the right balance of when we needed to work together and then separate to do individual study; in our second meeting we all looked at each others' research and ideas; I enjoyed working in a group because people interpret things differently, it can bring a new twist to the work as when one person has an idea, we all sparked off each other and developed it.</span></div>
<div style="color: #272727; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS'; font-size: 10px;">
<span style="color: #45818e; letter-spacing: 0.0px;">As my starting point I have decided to keep this theme, but concentrate on 'Sea Exploration' as this was the research that inspired me the most. Throughout my time at university I seem to be drawn to projects that have natural theme, this is why this section of the brief appealed to me.</span></div>

<div align="center" class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif; font-size: x-small; line-height: 115%;">The brief for this project was quite
open, you had to enter competitions but the competitions are ones that have
specific briefs and open ones. I knew from the beginning I wanted to go with an
open one.</span></div>
<div align="center" class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: white; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; color: #333333; line-height: 115%;"><span style="font-size: x-small;"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">
I decided to call my project ‘dispersion’ and I started taking photos for
primary research straight away as in the previous projects this is something I didn’t
have enough of and I didn’t do soon enough. I began dropping ink into water and
documenting how it dispersed. I also added oil, petrol and Clingfilm for
different effects. <br />
After I had taken my initial photographs I tried to think of different ways I could
make things disperse, while searching the internet I came across a technique
that uses sharpie pens, fabric and rubbing alcohol. This gave a different
effect all together to the photographs, I much preferred the photographs I took
of this technique while it was dispersing as opposed to the final fabrics.<br />
Both sets of these photographs played a big part in my project, some of them
were strong enough to use as a print on their own and others were layered with
other elements for either their texture or contents.<br />
My next step was to start creating more textures and drawings. I did this with
paints, watercolours and bleach. I then layered these 3 techniques on Photoshop
to create different effects and prints.<br />
As I began to put these prints onto flats I came to abit of a dead end and need
inspiration this is when I did my pattern inspiration board. This gave me new
and fresh ideas. I also hired out a projector to help me with scale and composition.
These two things gave me the inspiration I needed to carry my project forward.<br />
I made a few sets of flats before deciding that I didn’t think the flats were
doing anything for the garment from this I then started to displace my prints.
I found this really helpful and more realistic.<br />
I found it hard making my work it when entering competitions. When I first
entered threadless I was taken back by the fact they don’t print your fabric
and then make the garment from this, they use more of a screen printing
technique onto already made garments. This was a problem as I had always
planned that my garments would be made from printed farbics. Nevertheless I
entered a t-shirt. I later entered a
jumper that I was much more happy with; this is shown in one of my boards in
the previous blog post. I had put a lot more thought into it and my project had
come on leaps and bounds since my previous entry. I wish the feedback I received
would have been better quality as this may have given me new ideas in my
project.<br />
I am pleased with my final outcomes and feel that I managed my time in this
project better than I normally do. I have completed every task I set myself to
do and I have not skipped any corners. I wish I would have used illustrator
more to build more skills but it wasn’t relevant to my project.<br />
Within the next couple of weeks I am going to focus on getting my CV and
examples of my work out to as many companies as possible to try and sort out
work experience for the summer.<br />
In this project I have learnt that time management is key, I took my photographs
earlier than normal which got the ball rolling and I went in to uni most days
as a result of this my workload towards the end of the project wasn’t as big as
usual.</span><span style="font-family: Orator Std;"><o:p></o:p></span></span></span></div>
